No Monsanto Rally - Sat. May 25

On Saturday, about 130 people in Vernon joined the millions around the world (see attached article) who rallied to show their opposition to seed giant Monsanto and their Genetically Modified crops. Young people, families, retirees, professionals and teens all lined Vernon's highway to demonstrate their opposition to Monsanto's GM crops and to advocate solutions to food production that protect the environment and our health.

The fact that 2 separate events were organized in Vernon - one by Bee SAFE and the other by a Facebook group  testifies to the growing opposition to GM crops and food in Vernon. Among many statements made by participants, Huguette Allen of Bee SAFE reminded the crowd that Monsanto and its Genetically Modified seeds could not exist without government enabling it. "We've asked government for labelling, we've asked for GMO free zones, to no avail. On the contrary, under the guise of "food security" all levels of government are regulating food production in ways that benefit corporations. The only thing ordinary citizens can now do is to take to the streets to protest, and to protect our own communities against anymore GM crops, such as GM alfalfa, wheat, trees, and GM pharmacrops" said Allen.

Despite claims from corporations that Genetically Modified (GM) or Genetically Engineered (GE) crops feed more people, GM corn, soy, canola, sugar beet, are not engineered to be more resistant to drought or grow faster or better, but are engineered to sell a lot more pesticides that benefit Monsanto but destroy habitat and food sources for bees, Monarch butterflies, birds... GM crops contain 2 traits only: they generate their own pesticide and withstand drenching with the herbicide Roundup.
