Change Sought For Kal Beach Zoning

It may surprise some people that a popular local beach is zoned residential ---but that could change soon. Vernon councillor Juliette Cunningham is pushing to have Kal Beach in Coldstream rezoned to parks, saying the current R-1 zoning has been a bone of contention with their regional partners. "I think this shows that we're serious about restructuring the parks and making this a sub-regional facility forever," Cunningham tells Kiss FM. As part of a proposed parks service deal, Vernon has agreed to transfer its ownership of the beach to the Regional District of North Okanagan to make it a sub-regional park. Cunningham says the reluctance of the city to rezone the site before this has limited investments in that area, including to the parking lot. "(The thinking has been) if we didn't rezone it, why would we invest in it?," says Cunningham. Cunningham has filed a notice of motion to discuss the issue at council's next meeting in July. "The motivation is to make sure that it remains as public domain for the use that it's being used for now."
